As the interest in African American art has grown, artists have increasingly been interviewed about their art, their view on the meaning of being black in America today, and on their business. African American artists have long been difficult to classify; there are as many who are self-taught as there are who went to art school. The typical artist today has far better business skills than those of previous generations. The success that brings enables them to explore their craft more broadly, and try new things more readily. Synthia Saint James, for example, has written prose, poetry and song in addition to her world recognized paintings. She has also designed stained glass, elevator doors, lobbies and airport sections.

The only universally agreed-upon advice to someone new to collecting art is to buy what you like. Art is a luxury and meant to bring pleasure. To purchase art only for price appreciation is to deny someone the pleasure of owning it. It may be best to peruse the collections of those who have been involved for many years, and listen to their advice. I am always happy to help you as you begin or extend your collection, and may be able to introduce you to artists and pieces that are new to you. I can also help you determine which of the several reproductive techniques you would be most happy with, and can assist you in locating an original if only that will do.

Please look through the artists' interviews, the information on collecting, and the articles by the artists, and don't hesitate to call me for personal assistance.

Thank you,
Gordon Dew
